Dev Meeting 2014-10-05
Talad says: HI everyone
Talad says: welcome to the meet the developers event
Talad says: this event is completely OOC
Talad says: the purpose if for you to ask questions about the game, make comments, suggestions, etc…
Talad says: if you want to ask a question please walk on the stand in front of us
Talad says: today on stage we have:
Talad says: Mordaan and Taya from the setting department
Talad says: they work on quests, lore, books
Talad says: Eonwindd from the rules department, working on game balancing, spells, combat mechanics
Eonwindd says: hi
Talad says: and Sorka from the GM team. Actually I would like to announce that Sorka has been promoted to GM lead this week
Gonger says: Congratulations!
Talad says: he did a pretty good job in organizing events and leading the team
Eonwindd says: hails for Sorka!
Mordaan claps
Sorka bows to everyone
Kabitar applauds for Sorka
Talad says: I see no questions at the moment, so we can give some updates on what we are working on
Mordaan says: And Tay has been promoted to associate dev!
Mordaan says: yay!
Lumi says: 🙂 congrats Taya
Talad says: Mordaan can you summarize what setting is working on?
Mordaan says: Sure
Eonwindd says: contratz Taya
Tay says: That’s what I already was 😛
Pakerl hails Tay
Sorka pinches Tay and smiles
Lumi says: ah lol
Mordaan says: or, whatever is after that. 🙂
Eonwindd says: actyally Taya is a member
Tay smiles
Mordaan says: something good, anyway
Mordaan says: 😀
Mordaan says: Ok, as for a report..
Yurak says: Yay for TAY
Mordaan says: Not sure if everyone saw the dev blog section on the forums.
Tay smiles and then hides behind Sorka
Lumi says: totaly did Mordaan. great idez
Lumi says: idea*
Mordaan says: We’ve reactivated that again
Mordaan says: Thanks to Tuathanach for spearheading that.
Pakerl says: Godd!
Mordaan says: and the community for suggesting it
Mordaan says: As for settings, lots of good stuff being worked on for this release
Mordaan says: including a few new books, quite a few more quests, including some to introduce new or revised skills
Mordaan says: we’re currently testing the bow making quests
Kaerli says: \o/
Kaerli says: so those will be out with the next release then?
Mordaan says: also a reorganization of the shield making quests
Mordaan says: unless something really unexpected happens, that’s the plan. 🙂
Kaerli says: awesome
Mordaan says: some of those old shield quests have been revamped a bit
Mordaan says: and we’re also working on pterosaur travel to the BD
Mordaan says: but it will require an extra quest to get access
Lumi says: sweet
Pakerl says: even better!
Mordaan says: and the whole travel system has been impoved a bit
Mordaan says: Thanks to Venalan for that.
Talad says: Eonwindd : can you summarize the latest things rules is working on?
Jawir says: 🙂
Eonwindd says: sure
Eonwindd says: as of now, I’m working on 5 new spells
Pakerl says: hear, hear!
Eonwindd says: and on the spell system overall
Eonwindd says: we’re trying to make magic more balanced Vs. combat
Talad says: hi Kaerli , do you have a question?
Eonwindd says: this means a lot of spells have been reviewed and some have been modified a bit
Eonwindd says: hi Kaerli
Kaerli says: What’s the status of woodcarving?
Eonwindd says: it’s not in our plan to make wood carving a skill on its own
Mordaan says: its’ more part of other skills/jobs
Mordaan says: like bowmaking and shield making
Eonwindd says: wood carving will be possible of course but will be part of the specific skill
Eonwindd says: like Mordaan said
Mordaan says: I was all set to say wood will be in game but realized yesterday, it already is. 🙂
Eonwindd says: yep 😉
Berun says: Does that mean we’ll be able to make axe handles soon?
Eonwindd says: since last update it’s harvestable
Kaerli says: aaaaaah. so, will knife and axe handles be carveable soon then?
Mordaan says: It was too long since I really quested…I missed certain things. 😉
Lumi says: Tua posted about this on his blog i beleive already
Eonwindd says: yes Berun, in the next update. Thanks for Tuathanach for working on it
Lumi says: cf PS forum
Kaerli says: cool. that’s what I needed to know. continue with the rules update Eonwindd
Eonwindd says: and yes Kaerli them too
Eonwindd says: ok, any more questions?
Mordaan says: yeah, a lot of those parts you had to buy from NPCs, you’ll now be able to make yourself. But you’ll also have the option of still buying the 50Q versions.
Eonwindd says: exactly Mordaan, we don’t want to make things harder but give you the option to make your 300q stuff by crafting every part
Wolferz says: will masters of ways have wand models that are unique to their way in the future?
Shkirr mutters something about tria dumping
Eonwindd says: Wolferz please get in the line 🙂
Eonwindd says: hi Berun, do you have a question?
Berun says: Are there any plans to be able to train pets or make their skill levels mean anything?
Eonwindd says: Not yet, as of now. We may consider this in the future but it’a not been decided yet
Eonwindd says: hi Gonger
Gonger says: Greetings, and thanks for your great work. But the question of questions is: When will be the next update? (Soon TM?)
Talad says: we have built the internal one last week
Gonger says: Just being curious, everybody understands that you are testing thouroughly.
Talad says: did some testing
Talad says: and fixes
Talad says: we are now waiting weltall to build the release candidate
Eonwindd says: we’re testing the new client. So may happen in a few weeks, earlier if the release candidate will prove to be bug free
Talad says: as soon as we test the release candidate, we will be ready to release
Gonger says: Ok, thank you.
Talad says: from the engine side a new development has been completed to simplify the npc dialogues
Talad says: in particular you can now click on the bubbles to decide the speed you want them to disappear
Pakerl applauds loudly
Mordaan says: we are very looking forward to testing that out
Talad says: this still requires some testing
Mordaan says: But quest/KA menus & responses can be quite varied so it will require some heavy testing.
Mordaan says: So depends on how quickly we can make that bug free because it’s a pretty significant change.
Kaerli says: has there been any progress towards arrow recycling? I recall looking into hardcoding support for it, but Eonwind here wanted it in mathscripts, and I’m not sure if that requires changes to what’s possible in a mathscript, or if it can be done with the current state of the engine code
Eonwindd says: no, arrows recycling as of now.
Eonwindd says: the situation is still as it was
Bonifarzia nods at Eonwindd – more good news.
Bonifarzia should read more carefully before commenting and keeps quiet for now.
Kaerli says: mind pinging me on IRC sometime Eonwindd? I’m not sure why you want a softcoded implementation of this functionality
Eonwindd says: 🙂
Eonwindd says: ok Kaerli, but the main reason is we need more flexibility in the scripting
Eonwindd says: this is not only true for arows recycling but for many other things
Kaerli says: aaah. so the script support needed for arrow recycling will also be reused for other things, I see…
Shkirr nods “Not only in scripting…”
Eonwindd says: yes Kaerli
Enarel says: as a work around could you add arrows as a lootable item and have mob that drop bows also drop arrows? (not sure how hard it is to add a loot item)
Eonwindd says: Enarel I really don’t love workarounds 🙂
Jawir says: Agree 🙂
Enarel says: fair enough
Eonwindd says: to be honest I’ve already found too many workarounds in the scripts before I revised them
Mordaan says: Though you will be able to make arrows with bow making skill. fwiw
Eonwindd says: workarounds usually become a problem when the right implementation is finally done
Kaerli says: agreed Eonwindd
Jawir says: And it’s even hard to understand why they were that way after some time!
Eonwindd says: I only do workarounds only when extremely needed, imo while I agree there is a balance problem with arrows it’s not big enough to justify a workaround 🙂
Eonwindd says: yes Jawir that too! 😉
Jawir says: 🙂
Bonifarzia waves – gotta leave again.
Eonwindd says: bye, Boni
Talad says: ok, if there are no other questions we can wrap up
Talad says: Sorka maybe you can give an update of the next events planned?
Eonwindd says: any more questions?
Mordaan says: was there a question about wands/staves ?
Tuon says: I heard more OSX testers were needed I’ve been trying to compile the client on my mac so the compile guide can be updated but i’m having issues with CS failing spectacularly on compile (Jam). I’ve posted on the website about it
Eonwindd says: yes Tuon we need more testers on osx
Lumi says: compile as in “zip” thingy ?
Sorka nods ” I won’t tell you any date, but will just inform you that our goal is to run 2 events a weeks”
Sorka says: minimum
Talad says: Tuon, will be good if you could connect to #planeshift-build in IRC
Talad says: there are instructions on the website
Talad says: so we can speak about it there
Talad says: building on Mac is not easy
Tuon says: no it’s not easy.
Lumi says: >.>
Jawir says: It could be nice to set up an xCode project as for visual studio
Mordaan says: It would also help if the compile guides were updated a bit.
Wolferz says: sorry, I forgot about the line earlier
Wolferz says: I was just wondering if the ways wands would have unique models in the future or if they will share models with other ways/special wands.
Eonwindd says: hi Wolferz
Mordaan says: There are staves that Tuux made, like the one Sorka is holding. It will be a future project to work those into the game. Last I saw there was still some debate on how to do that.
Lumi says: woaaa
Lumi says: ahaah
Lumi says: Master of the Kikirikis
Mordaan says: They have been around for a couple of years now.
Wolferz says: so alot of the wands we have now are placeholds?
Mordaan says: And some got them as GM rewards
Mordaan says: That’s one of the things we need to work out.
Wolferz says: ok, thanks
Eonwindd says: however the GMs are allowed to give them as rewards, if the quest fits it
Eonwindd says: it’s a recent policy, plus it will require the server update
Eonwindd says: so they will be able to do it only after the update
Mordaan says: yeah, right now I don’t think all the staves are even in the db.
Mordaan says: or in the right category.
Eonwindd says: they are but the server is not set to spawn them
Mordaan says: ah, ok
Eonwindd says: 🙂
Mordaan says: bottom line, future project. 🙂
Eonwindd says: will be fixed at the next update anyway
Korenis says: is that a chicken headed staff?
Talad says: the chicken one needs a texture update 🙂
Korenis says: Ok it just threw me off
Mordaan says: oh, there was also the whole thing about their effect (buffs, effect on magic, etc.)
Eonwindd says: it’s the Awesome Staff of Kikiri Might
Eonwindd says: 🙂
Gonger says: The Chicken Way – only one spell, which allows you to run faster!
Mordaan says: 😀
Korenis says: I need that
Eonwindd says: there is another one
Evaraj says: lol
Menille laughs
Eonwindd says: lets you change yourself in a kikiri
Menille says: 0-0
Gonger says: Female or male?
Korenis says: both
Eonwindd says: depends on the char gender
Eonwindd says: but female have a bonus on casting XD
Enal says: lol sexist
Eonwindd says: 😛
Eonwindd says: any more questions?
Wolferz says: well, each master staff could have a few master spells with it, or add mana efficiency for that way, or add a certain effect to all spells of that way…hmm
Eonwindd says: there are plans to design special powers available only to way masters
Menille says: Very nice indeed
Pakerl decides to train hard….
Talad says: ok Sorka something from your side on GM team?
Gonger says: Talking about ways – do levels of opposing Ways have an impact on the effect of a spell’s way? I mean, is it implemented yet?
Eonwindd says: so you can cast every single spell in game and reach 200 in every single way but being master could give a bonus on the chosen way
Eonwindd says: replying to Gnger I would like to clarify the current spells rules for saves and magic resistance
Eonwindd says: please note they’re already like that for every single spell in game
Sorka says: Just like I said earlier we are now back to a decent number of GMs 8 curently + Tay who help us a lot, So you can expect more Events coming soon
Sorka says: more Guard patrol
Sorka says: most events will not be added to the calendar,
Mordaan says: ooh, 8. 🙂 Nice.
Eonwindd says: If a spell allows a save (this means it may deals half damage or negate the spell effect) the check is based on the SAME way
Sorka says: we just wnat to add the big one there
Sorka says: Our goal is now 2 events per week
Sorka says: + spontaneous ones
Eonwindd says: the reason is a higher knowledge of the same way can give a benefit to avoid some effects
Korenis says: Any specific days you plan on having the events?
Kaerli says: fight fire with fire 😉
Eonwindd says: ok can we stay on the same topic? 😛
Gonger says: So what is the sense of opposing ways, then?
Sorka says: mostly weekend, but we can decide to run an event whenever we want
Lumi says: yes there was one yesterday actually
Lumi says: 😀
Eonwindd says: Opposing ways enter in game because they give MAGIC RESISTANCE Vs. the opposing way
Sorka says: also I we are working on a Player Event Initiative with Tay
Sorka says: something to help player running event
Gonger says: Ah, I understand better now. Thank you.
Sorka says: should be soon on the forum
Menille looks at Eonwnnd, then back to Sorka then back to Eonwinnd again
Eonwindd says: so if you are a blue way spellcaster the best way to counter a red way spell effect is to cast water sphere or other BlW buffs on you
Kaerli says: On that topic, do opposing ways do anything to your *base* resistance to a way?
Kaerli says: (i.e. without casting any buffs on yourself)
Eonwindd says: Not unless you have a spell cast on yourself
Lumi says: no it make you resistance to your own way
Kaerli says: got it.
Kaerli says: will the Shadowcaster quests eventually turn up, btw?
Eonwindd says: of course enchanted items like armours gives a MR vs. the opposing way
Eonwindd says: I felt that coming Mordaan 🙂
Lumi says: lol
Mordaan says: like the staves project, it’s something that needs to be discussed/worked on.
Mordaan says: IF we even decide to more forward with that idea.
Eonwindd says: imo I like the shadow casters idea
Mordaan says: but we have to make a decision one way or another.
Mordaan says: Me too
Kaerli says: b/c it’s been a carrot dangling in front of our noses for a long time, and something that differentiates PS from other, more specialization-oriented magic systems as well
Lumi says: but we don’t even know what they are supposed to be yet
Lumi says: D:
Mordaan says: Yeah, I’m not choosing a circle either for that reason.
Eonwindd says: however I want to clarify (from rules perspective) shadowcaster will not give a bigger benefit than being a way archmaster
Lumi says: phew
Menille smiles
Eonwindd says: the benefits will be different but not more powerful
Kaerli says: yeah. I wasn’t expecting it to give something OP in and of itself compared to Way archmastery
Eonwindd says: e.g. more oriented toward versatility
Kaerli says: just different and more versatile
Eonwindd says: exactly
Talad says: ok, we are at the top of hour
Talad says: we can wrap up the event
Talad says: thanks for your participation, we hope to relesae the new client pretty soon
Gonger says: Thanks for all the information.
Talad says: enjoy PlaneShift, and advertize the game

Thanks for posting logs from the DEV meetings!
