Dev Meeting 2014-06-08

Mordaan says: Ok, welcome.
Mordaan says: Maybe Talad will still arrive.
Mordaan says: But until then maybe we can get started?
Waesed says: sure
Zrak nods
Mordaan says: We have some engine devs here.
Mordaan says: Maybe we can start with some updates…what we’re working on?
Mordaan says: Then if there’s any questions, as usual you can form a line at the podiums.
Mordaan says: Jilare, Eredin? Anything…? 🙂
Jilare waves
Jilare says: [I’m on the phone, just a sec.]
Eredin says: I’m working on isolating the problem with the latest version of CS so we can get them to fix it.
Eredin says: After that I’m going to continue refactoring the SC & AM objects.
Venalan says: I know the next server update will fix all the combat bugs, something that Jilare did.
Venalan says: he also recently fixed a client hang at character creation
Mordaan says: As for settings, we recently had a release. And just a few days ago we had another quest mirror, which fixes a lot of small typos and issues reported in the tracker.
Waesed says: good, that was a hang-up for new players
Venalan says: we realy need the server update, but the server update means a client update, and the client depends on CS, and CS is broken…so will take a while
Venalan says: and thanks to eveyone who has been reporting bugs to me, I think we are back to a very stable level for quests 🙂
Venalan says: I’ve done a little bit of UI cleaning, moving the previous/next arrows on the quest dialogue screen to the middle and making them darker so you can see them better
Mordaan says: Yes, sometimes it was not so obvious there are more menu choices
Mordaan says: or at least it could be easily missed.
Mordaan says: A quick look reveals there are about 699 open bugs.
Mordaan says: which is about the same as a few months ago. 😛
Jawir says: lol
Eredin says: it seems a never ending list. sigh.
Mordaan says: but with new client and settings releases, at least we’re not falling further behind. 🙂
Mordaan says: so \o/
Jawir says: It happens to all kind of softwares: new features = new bugs 🙂
Mordaan says: yep
Venalan says: a good number of those are just waiting for rules/server updates
Jilare says: [I’m back]
Glaciusor is all too familiar with that rule…
Jawir says: Even in commercial software!
Eredin says: looks like we lost mordaan.
Jilare says: As Venalan said, I have been working on the new combat system and a few bugs here and there.
Eredin says: if anyone has questions, please queue up at the stands
Jilare says: I have been pretty busy in real life so this is the first chance I’ve had to join the dev meeting in quite awhile.
Jawir says: Welcome back then 🙂
Eredin says: Hi Glorgal
Glorgal says: hi hi.
Glorgal says: not sure how long ago you fixed the bug that caused me to fall to my doom every time i changed maps. but you fixed it, so i came back. thanks.
Eredin says: OH! that would have been quite a hindrance to play! Welcome back
Venalan says: I don’t remember a bug like that in a while, but welome back
Glorgal says: it was a LONG time ago.
Glorgal says: i don’t really have a question. just wanted to say good job on all the work you’ve been doing in that time, and i’m looking forward to exploring it all.
Eredin says: was there a question too?
Glorgal waves
Eredin says: Thanks Glorgal ! That makes all the work worthwhile 😀
Eredin says: Hi Kabitar
Kabitar says: Hello all.
Kabitar says: I wanted to know if the unprotected items in action location containers gonna be fixed.
Eredin says: Is there a bug report open on that one?
Kabitar says: Yes.
Venalan says: jilare has been looking at that for a while
Eredin says: ok.
Jilare says: [Sorry folks. This is how it has been. As soon as I get what I think is a free moment, I get pulled away by responsibilities.]
Eredin says: JIlare, comments?
Kabitar says: It’s 6211
Eredin says: [np. RL first]
Venalan says: the bug does not appear in SVN data which makes it hard for jilare to reproduce
Jilare says: I still haven’t found the bug although I did fix a few cases where the owner was being set incorrectly.
Mordaan says: [sorry, pc rebooted :/ ]
Smirick says: wb
Eredin says: it’s ok mordaan we moved on to questions
Jilare says: gtg
Mordaan says: good, I was typing that when I crashed. 🙂
Smirick says: ttfn
Kabitar says: Ok. good luck in hunting this one. It’s really annoying.
Kabitar says: Thanks.
Eredin says: if anyone can find it it’s Jilare 🙂
Eredin says: Hi Jemima
Jemima says: Hi…
Jemima says: There are a lot of players who did max fighting and the use of armor. Many do get bored with the monsters they do have to fight now…
Jemima droops her ears “Many of the maxed Family-members have left PS… THey did tell me they didn’t have a reason to fight anymore… Looting monsters… It was as if they were taking the favourity squeeky toy from a cub… no danger at all….”
Jemima says: Can you make a map where those players have to team up to be able to survive.?
Jemima says: Maby you can make the whole… or a big part of that map a PvP area tabei…
Jemima grins “I don’t think we do need mines overthere…”
Jemima says: Just a rather big map… enough trees to hide behind… a few hills…. and a load of really dangerous beasts will do…
Jemima looks hopefull at the devs…
Venalan says: there are mobs ready to go which really need groups to kill
Eredin says: one of the things in the works is “Boss” creatures
Venalan says: but there are no plans to make a PVP map
Eredin says: Boss creatures are planned to be physically larger as well as tougher
Jemima purrs “As long as we can keep maxed players busy tabei… that’s what counts…”
Eredin says: it is a problem that we’ve discussed.
Mordaan says: I’m a little disappointed the Lavvar isn’t tougher. There is also the boss of the ash brotherhood.
Mordaan says: that should be coming soon
Eredin says: Oh, Jemima, on a related note –
Bonifarzia says: Looking forwards to that!
Jemima says: And err… youo don’t want to have a Boss-creature ner a mine… Miners aren’t the best fighters… you know..?
Jemima says: Mew..?
Eredin says: scale is now working, you should be able to petition to have your char changed to the right size. 🙂
Jawir says: Nice! 🙂
Jemima purrrrrrssss… dives into Eredin’s arms… and licks his face “Mew tabei… mew.!!”
Venalan says: I have not see any rules on what the max-min of that should be
Bonifarzia says: very nice… unless it makes me get suck in most doorways…
Eredin says: lol!
Jemima waves “Mewmew…” and runs off…
Eredin says: well…be warned – you may be the first and there may yet be probelms with it.
Venalan says: and scale wont be done until a max-min limit is decied
Waesed says: At what level does music become normal?
Venalan says: so please don’t file petitions yet for scale
Eredin says: sorry Jemima, I guess I missed part of that discussion. sorry to get your hopes up.
Jemima looks at Venalan with kitty eyes “Mew..?”
Eredin says: but it’s coming soon-er.
Jemima says: I can wait tabei… and errr.. when you have decided… can you put me on the ninimal size..? 🙂
Jawir says: 1 pixel XD
Jemima says: Meep.!!
Mordaan says: hence the need for a min/max. People tend to test the limits just for kicks.
Mordaan says: we don’t want chars the size of a building or an ant
Glaciusor says: Hmm, might just make use of that… my char was a xacha, still want him to be taller >.>
Bonifarzia says: well, you have size ranges per race in settings, havn’t you?
Eredin says: amybe we could say the race size listed in the settings +/- some percentage.
Eredin says: maybe
Eredin says: anyway, we’ll discuss it in devs
Mordaan says: yep, it all needs to be worked out
Eredin says: and get back to you. it’s a feature I very much want to see in play.
Waesed says: wouldn’t want an 8′ tall dwarf
Bonifarzia says: a few percent variation already add a good feeling of personalization… which is good.
Eredin says: exactly what I’m wanting to see.
Venalan says: scaling is also buggy, so that needs fixing before we even think about letting it out for players
Glorgal says: nobody could handle that much dwarf. there’s already too much of us at this size.
Smirick says: how about a dwarf diaboli would look cool lol
Mordaan says: go ahead, Waesed
Jawir says: lol
Waesed says: At what level does music become normal?
Mordaan says: ah, right you -did- ask
Smirick drools at the thought of being small as a dwarf
Mordaan says: no idea.
Mordaan says: rules might know but eonwind isn’t here today.
Waesed says: thanks
Varnum says: On scaling , I assume currently that the scaling is uniform, I wonder if it could allow for tall and skinny OR short an thicker too ?
Mordaan says: or Lucubro
Mordaan says: yeah, it’s uniform
Smirick says: i want to be short
Jemima says: Err… if you scale… get the mount scaled too..?
Eredin says: At this point there is no facility to change the aspect ratio, only the overall size.
Mordaan says: else scaling would have to have more parameters.
Mordaan says: it’s just a single factor.
Mordaan says: and no, mounts would not scale with you
Bonifarzia says: walking animation wrt scale has been fixed in the meanwhile?
Varnum says: Ok, was just curious as to its options perhaps not chosen as yet, thanks
Venalan says: walking speed scales with scale
Venalan says: jump does not scale
Bonifarzia says: that’s not important 😉
Venalan says: mounts to do not scale, so a 10% size character would look normal size mounted
Jemima says: Wow… good.!! would hate to be not able to jump as far or high as before… 🙂
Venalan says: jump SHOULD scale with size
Shkirr says: Jump also can be varied depending on race…
Jemima shakes her head vigorously “mew.!!”
Jemima says: Onon race that would make sence…
Jawir says: Indeed!
Venalan says: jump and speed are the same so there are no benifits on race
Jawir says: Coukd that cause a lot of overhead?
Bonifarzia says: makes sense… but one day, those poor klyros should be able to glide…
Eredin says: that has been discussed, but the feeling is that chaing speed/jump/etc on race would give too many penalties…for example to dwarves.
Jawir says: *could
Jemima says: Maby you would want to change the max running-speed for the different races too…
Waesed says: dwarfs should be able to mine better and drink more beer
Eredin says: lol
Mordaan says: eventually, there could be slight variations of speed/jump based on race, but the balance would have to be carefully worked out so as to not penalize certain races.
Jemima shivers “It’s for a fenki horrible to not to be able to outrun a barrel on legs tabei… really….”
Eredin says: lol!
Jawir says: lol
Mordaan says: 🙂
Eredin says: there are sharp differences of opinions amoung the dev team on this, so i believe Talad has rulled in favor of fairness to all the races.
Bonifarzia says: Gotta go … thanks for all the kind info and have fun everyone.
Mordaan says: *nod*
Jawir says: That could be discount for dwarves flying with a pterosaur
Jawir says: *there
Eredin says: Hi Kabitar
Kabitar says: I have another question.
Kabitar says: I noticed that when I heat and hammer steel quality drops to about 90. Is this a bug or do I need more training?
Venalan says: I’m very much for picking a race based on looks and history, not running speed or jump hight which is what will happen
Venalan says: none here know Kabitar
Venalan says: you need a rules guy
Mordaan says: yep
Eredin says: yeah, that sounds like a question for eonwind. sorry.
Waesed says: lvl, most likely
Kabitar says: So I will file it on flyspray…
Waesed says: keep at it
Kabitar says: Thanks.
Venalan says: a bug based on your level
Jawir says: lol
Venalan says: add details like that to the bug report
Venalan says: level, steel type, book, tools
Glaciusor says: I’ve noticed similar… used to be able to hammer steel to q300 at a fairly low level, can’t anymore…
Kabitar says: Maxed met and 186 Blacksmith should get better results…
Jawir says: INDEED!
Varnum says: Would it not be more inline to have the LEMUR’s use the Nolthrir mesh rather than a dermorian one, until theirs is ready ?
Smirick says: i naxed met and blacksmithing and dont do to bad
Venalan says: I asked talad about this and the response whas to keep the variation high. but since then more races are done and there are less on total. It is something he would have to be persuaded to do
Waesed says: bug him on irc
Varnum says: Odd , but ok, thanks
Mordaan says: when it was first decided, the male nolthrir model wasn’t around yet. Now it would have to be a change.
Venalan says: this isnt really the right one
Mordaan says: it does make sense since there are fewer nolthrirs but really, it’s a bit artibrary. *shrug*
Venalan says: when the decision to use ynnwn for lemur was made there would have been no nolthrir to use
Venalan says: lemur female*
Mordaan says: Any other questions/comments/suggestions ?
Kabitar says: Thanks for the many new quests.
Mordaan says: everyone liking the new ones?
Waesed says: and glyphs being made available
Smirick says: what about a city for my race and simular and dwarf city
Venalan says: I had as lot fun and spent a lot of time getting all those ready
Venalan says: tay wrote a new one
Tay says: 🙂
Venalan says: most of the new ones were designed by players
Kabitar says: I like the handheld exterior window opener…
Venalan says: I had the hrad job of making them work xD
Mordaan says: 😀
Zrak says: New quests are entertaining! 😀
Tay says: Yes, the new quests were in part due to a lot of players stepping forward. Was really good to see.
Venalan says: same goes for the books
Mordaan nods
Jawir says: Are there new researchable spells related to the new glyphs?
Venalan says: most of them were degigned and wrtten by players and worked on with me
Mordaan says: every new glyph has an associated spell
Tay says: Every glyph should have spells I think
Venalan says: every glyph has 1+ spells
Menille says: I think everyone involved did a marvellous job.
Jawir says: Ah great!
Venalan says: but there were no ‘new’ ones
Venalan says: just ‘old’ ones you could find
Mordaan says: else we would have no reason to release them. 🙂
Venalan says: thats not always been the case though mordaan
Jawir says: true 😛
Mordaan says: true, but I mean these particular ones
Venalan says: when the chains first came out most new glyphs were useless to start with
Jawir says: Do you have a way to know if some spells are never been found?
Smirick says: still think ever race should ave a home city
Venalan says: teachnically yes, Jawir, but we arnt that interested to check 🙂
Jemima nods “More maps…”
Venalan says: Smirick if you want to make them then do it
Jawir says: Ok Venalan 🙂
Glorgal says: +1
Venalan says: we have 0 people working on 3D atm
Jawir says: That’s a real pity!
Smirick says: somebody a grouch
Mordaan says: There was talk by Talad about having the research message distinguish between a spell failing because there is no spell with that glyph combination or if there is one but you just failed at that attempt.
Venalan says: that 0 3D people means almost nothing new art wise gets made atm
Waesed says: Amdeneir was player made, wasn’t it?
Venalan says: yeah
Venalan says: but its 1/3 done
Venalan says: and took years and years
Gag says: Don’t make it bigger than Hydlaa, or the settings are wrong! …
Jemima says: 3D is a slow and painfull proces tabei…
Mordaan says: yep
Venalan says: the Oja extenstion was made by one person who was, for the time they were making it, very dedicated
Glorgal says: they did a good job, too.
Gag says: Kore
Gag says: And Steel Bazaar
Glorgal says: can i ask what tools are needed to do the work?
Venalan says: most seems to be done in blender
Venalan says: then a conversion toold to get it CS complient
Venalan says: there are details on the PS wiki
Venalan says: I suggest you look at that to get a better idea
Jawir says: Is it possible to revert from in-game art to blender format?
Gag says: Nikodemus was main contributor for Amdeneir; you may find him with a few more ‘s’ in IRC.
Venalan says: Jawir, if you built a tool to do it, yes
Gag says: Reverse is possible, but not trivial.
Jawir says: Ah ok, well I’m not a programmer unfortunately, I was just wondering because I’m curious…
Jemima says: It can come in handy… to find out how shapes are build tabei…
Mordaan says: modelling is painstaking stuff. It takes a lot of ‘stick-to-it-ness’. 🙂
Smirick says: your lucky you didnt get a reply like i got jawir
Jawir says: lol
Smirick says: was rude way of telling someone who just commented
Venalan says: it wasnt meant rude
Smirick says: enough of this meeting
Gag waves goodbye.
Mordaan says: Yes, we can close the meeting.
Mordaan says: Thanks for attending, everyone!
Mordaan waves
